To Give Souls a National Form. National Celebrations in Times of the Commission of National Education
The book explores the formation of national celebrations in the second half of the 18th century. Celebrating national holidays was considered an important educational aspect and thus schools ran by the Commission of National Education celebrated days connected with the ruler. In 1783 the celebrations of the Battle of Vienna initiated commemorating important historical events. Schools also participated in ceremonies held to mark the first statutory celebration – the anniversary of the 3rd May Constitution. The book presents various forms of celebrations, which combined the elements of religion (masses), science (speeches, talks, presentations, popular lectures), art (performances, declamations) and spectacles (illuminations and fireworks).
