Henry James

Henry James, amerykańsko-brytyjski pisarz i krytyk literacki, urodził się 15 kwietnia 1843 roku w Nowym Jorku. Jego ojciec, Henry James senior, był znanym filozofem i teologiem. Jego brat natomiast, William James, to jeden z pionierów współczesnej psychologii. Przyszły pisarz dorastał w Europie, do której też często podróżował w późniejszych latach.

Jako pisarz i krytyk literacki zyskał sobie dużą popularność. Jego utwory tłumaczone były na wiele języków obcych. Wdał się też w głośny spór z H. G. Wellsem, zarzucając autorowi "Wojny światów" kaznodziejstwo i psychologiczną płytkość postaci.

Rozczarowany postawą USA wobec wielkiej wojny, przeprowadził się do Anglii. Przyjął też brytyjskie obywatelstwo. Zmarł kilka tygodni później, 28 lutego 1916 roku w Londynie, po dwóch zawałach serca.

Znany jest przede wszystkim jako twórca powieści psychologicznych, w których skupiał się na analizie wewnętrznego życia postaci. Jego dzieła często poruszają tematy takie jak miłość, władza, kultura i sztuka.

W 1898 roku James wydał jedno ze swoich najbardziej znanych dzieł, powieść "Inny obrót śruby", która stała się klasykiem literatury grozy. Powieść ta opowiada historię młodej guwernantki, która zostaje zatrudniona do opieki nad dwójką dzieci, ale szybko odkrywa, że dom, w którym pracuje, może być nawiedzony przez duchy.

Poniżej prezentujemy wybór najbardziej znanych dzieł Henry'ego Jamesa. Mamy tu zatem powieści "Zaufanie" czy "Amerykanin", ale również zbiory opowiadań, np. "Plan Waszyngtona" i "O duchach". Ten drugi tom zasługuje na szczególną uwagę miłośników fantastyki i literatury grozy. Zamieściliśmy tu również sporo utworów pisarza w oryginale.
